Agroforestry - an option to consider
Aug. 29, 2019
Minister Doyle @ADoyleTD today spoke of the role agroforestry can play to many farmers. It caters for lower density tree planting on farmers allowing animals to graze and shelter beneath the canopy. The species suggested are hardwoods (Oak, Sycamore and Cherry). The typical or suggested planting rate is 400 -1,000 tree's per hectare.
Some of the benefits of this scheme include improved animal welfare, run off filtration and enhanced income on the land. Premium rates, available for 5 years, are €660 per hectare - so if you planted 5 hectares, you would receive €16,500 in a tax free premium.
